Saint Thomas

The Apostle of Faith

Saint Thomas

This magnificent stained glass window honours Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Often remembered as "Doubting Thomas," his initial doubt about Christ’s resurrection turned into a profound declaration of faith when he proclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" His journey from doubt to belief serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of encountering the risen Christ.

In this depiction, Saint Thomas is shown holding a builder’s square, symbolising his role as the patron saint of architects and builders, and reflecting his contributions to spreading the Gospel and building the early Church. The book he holds represents the teachings of Christ that he carried to distant lands, traditionally believed to include India, where he was martyred for his faith. Clothed in vibrant red and green, Saint Thomas embodies both the passion and hope central to the Christian faith.

Saint Thomas’ life encourages us to seek a deeper understanding of our faith and to trust in God, even when we face doubts or challenges.

A Prayer to Saint Thomas

O Glorious Saint Thomas,
your grief for Jesus was such
that it would not let you believe
he had risen unless you actually
saw him and touched his wounds.
But your love for Jesus
was equally great and it led you
to give up your life for him.
Pray for us that we may grieve
for our sins which were the cause of Christ's sufferings.
Help us to spend ourselves in his service
and so earn the title of "blessed"
which Jesus applied to those who would believe
in him without seeing him.

Amen.
