Saint Matthew
The Apostle and Evangelist

This beautiful stained glass window honours Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the author of the first Gospel in the New Testament. Once a tax collector, Saint Matthew left his profession to follow Christ, demonstrating the transformative power of faith and God’s call to repentance.
In this depiction, Saint Matthew holds a book, representing the Gospel he wrote, which focuses on Jesus as the Messiah and the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies. The axe in his hand is a symbol of his martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to spreading the Good News, even at the cost of his life. Clothed in green robes, he symbolises renewal and the hope offered through Christ.
Saint Matthew’s story is a powerful reminder that God calls each of us, regardless of our past, to follow Him and share His message of salvation.
A Prayer to Saint Matthew
O God, who with untold mercy were pleased to choose as an Apostle Saint Matthew, the tax collector, grant that, sustained by his example and intercession, we may merit to hold firm in following you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
St. Matthew, pray for us
Amen.
