Saint James the Major

The Pilgrim Apostle

Saint James the Major

This vibrant stained glass window depicts Saint James the Major, one of Jesus’ closest apostles and the patron saint of pilgrims. Known for his bold faith and missionary zeal, Saint James travelled far and wide to spread the Gospel, becoming one of the first apostles to be martyred for Christ.

In this artwork, Saint James is adorned in the traditional pilgrim’s attire, complete with a staff and a scallop shell—a symbol of his association with the Camino de Santiago, the famous pilgrimage route to his shrine in Spain. The book of scriptures in his hand represents his role in spreading the Word of God, while his resolute expression reflects his unwavering dedication to Christ.

Saint James’ life inspires us to embrace the journey of faith, walking with courage and conviction even in the face of trials.

A Prayer to Saint James the Major

O glorious Apostle, Saint James,
who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart
was chosen by Jesus to be witness of His glory on Mount Tabor,
and of His agony in Gethsemane;
thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory;
obtain for us strength and consolation
in the unending warfare of this life,
that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus,
we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive
the victor’s crown in heaven.
Amen.
